Getting Yourself Right

Life is a romantic business. It is painting a picture, not doing a sum, but you have to make it a romance, and it will come to the question of how much fire you have in your belly. Oliver Wendall Holmes.

We are living in constantly changing, ever demanding, stressful times.

How we deal with them has much to do with how we choose to see life. Everyday we are offered choices and make decisions, some larger than others, that will determine our destination.

One of the most important is to not give in to the cynicism and negativity to which we are daily subjected. Another choice, of equal weight, is to decide how we view life.

Either we’re all going to hell in a hand basket , so nothing matters anyway, or it’s a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime trip, albeit with some inevitable bumps along the way.

I, for one, unabashedly subscribe to the second choice. Not that it is easy. Life finds a way of throwing up obstacles and challenges just when you think you have it nailed. Have you noticed?

It’s easy to get distracted, all tied up in knots. When that happens, the brightly coloured landscape you were painting turns dark. Your brush, once so soft and fluid, hardens. One day you’re fine, the next you are stuck, seemingly unable to get moving again. You’re stalled, the romance gone out of your life.

So how to get it back?

The trick lies is knowing how to untie the knots and get a handle on whatever is holding you back.

My guess is that it’s fear. It’s the number one killer of personal growth and any other kind of positive advancement.

Fear stops you from thinking critically. Fear shrinks and distorts your vision. It lulls you into inaction and, worst of all, it is self-realizing.

Want to put some colour back into your picture? At some point, you’ll have to take action and deal with whatever is holding you back, no matter how painful. When you do, though, you’ll set yourself on fire.

You create your own reality. With that creation comes a feeling of empowerment and a renewed sense of responsibility. It results in a mental toughness that produces in your mind the clarity of direction you need to get to the next plateau, whatever you have in mind.

There are no secrets. What you think matters. Who you are matters. What you stand for matters. Everything counts.

The choice of colours is yours.

It’s all about being real and getting yourself right. When you do, everything else in your life will be right, too, just as it was meant to be.

Brightly coloured.
