Self-Esteem

Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out that they’ve a second. Give your dreams all you’ve got and you’ll be amazed at the energy that comes out of you. William James.

The ability to know your perceptions are accurate has to happen without the validation of others.

Intuition, a gut feeling, a voice whispering in your ear… whatever term you choose, the feeling is real.

It’s not the result of some secret potion or something in the water. It’s the natural consequence of having strong self-esteem.

Rock solid self-esteem, coupled with your courage and hope, is the greatest power you have. It continually fuels the flame of the great adventure that is your life.

In the words of the Persian poet, Rumi, life is a balance of letting go and holding on. Live In The Now

If you miss the present moment, you miss your appointment with life.Tich Nhat Hanh.

The daily demands on our lives at work and at home never seem to stop. They just keep on coming. Everybody wants a piece of us and our time, but there is only so much of it to go around. Fact is, there are only 24 hours in the day, 168 in the week. Faster and faster …. it’s tiring.

Faster and faster can catch up to you. It can ruin relationships, cut down on efficiency at work and suck the joy out of life.

All is not lost, though… not if you don’t want it to be. Living in the now is an attitude. It is all about being mindful, something you can learn. Practicing mindfulness will take time and discipline. It’s a process that takes longer to do than simply reading this. There are courses you can take, books you can read and groups you can join. But for starters, here are five things you can do now. Take a minute….

  1. Wrestle your to do list to the ground. Be ruthlessly honest. Remember you only have 168 hours and after you subtract time for eating, sleeping and doing all the daily required tasks, there really aren’t that many hours left. Do what’s important first.
  2. Learn to say say “no.” If someone asks for your a piece of your time, check your calendar before you commit. Arrange a mutually convenient time to get together. Mutually is the operative word.
  3. Stop being a slave to the Internet and social media. It can be a terrible time waster.
  4. In your face-to-face relationships, increase your awareness of how you interact and respond to others. Practice being aware. Be attentive. Listen. Develop more patience.
  5. Concentrate more on today and not so much on the future. If you are doing the right things today, the future will look after itself.

The here and now is all we have, but if we play our cards right, it’s all we really need!

If Only We’d Listen

Sharing is a much better way to communicate than proving. Yo Yo Ma.

Like a pair of giant knitting needles, globalization and the social media platforms have knitted us together, like it or not.

Whether we are in Toronto, Toledo or Timbuktu, we are living in a giant global village – interconnected, interdependent, challenging us to open our hearts and broaden our world view.

Generally speaking, a view world is a set of expectations and biases we have formed that shapes how we see and feel about people in other nations and, indeed, even in our own cities and neighbourhoods – each of them with their own world view, different from ours.

Accommodation isn’t always easy but as distances and time continue to shrink, it is good to remember that most of us, regardless of where we stand on the globe, are just trying to get through the day, striving to stay alive, better our conditions, to do the best by our families and those for whom we care.

We are all in this together. We are not the same, of course. Our cultures, religions, educational backgrounds societal differences can make strangers of us – but only if we let them.

The songs we sing, the stories we tell in sound and words can sound foreign, even scary, to others. Still, as the world gets smaller, we need to step up our collective effort to make the effort to narrow the gap, remembering that a stranger is only a person whose story or song we have never heard, if only we’d listen.

Get On To What’s Next!

Are you a doer, always up for challenges, looking for what’s next?

need-to-grow-drew-simmie

You are not alone. There is an ever growing cohort of people who, having completed a successful run, are on the hunt for “what’s next” in their lives,

Comfortable but not satisfied. Reasonably content with their life/business/career situation but sensing there is still more out there for them, they want to step up their game.

Some are bored to death, fearful of growing stale and irrelevant.

A growing number of brave souls are seriously thinking about a complete rewrite.

The central issue in all of the above is the need to keep on growing. We all need to grow. It is as necessary as breathing. It is part of humankind’s DNA. We are hard-wired to be curious and to always be hungry for more.

Why is that? It is because that whatever the new goal or aspiration, it isn’t so much the goal itself but the action of striving, the challenge that lies at the heart of the growing process.

The act of striving is a creative, challenging activity. It’s what keeps you interested, interesting and totally engaged. No matter what the environment in which you find yourself, it is always possible to maintain your integrity.

Get active again. Retain responsibility. Work harder, if you must, for the things you believe in. If you don’t you are surrendering your future to others. Don’t let that happen.

You know what to do. Just get out there and get on to what’s next!
