Believe You Can!

Believe you can and you’re halfway there. Theodore Roosevelt.

Whether you are thinking about building upon what you are already doing or starting out in a new direction, you can be sure that there are going to be changes. Change is the new currency today.

Change is never easy. It will take determination, hard work and discipline, but if you really want it badly enough and are willing to give it your all, there isn’t a better time than today.

Start with wherever you are and with whatever you have to work with.

And never stop believing  you can.

Spend Some Time In Nature

There are moments when all anxiety and stated toil are becalmed in the infinite leisure and repose of nature. Henry David Thoreau.

Connecting with nature, in any of its forms, is important to your health and well being. It helps to reduce stress, sooth your spirits and sharpen your senses.

Few of us have the luxury, as had Thoreau, when he went into woods and spent two years in a solitary cabin on Walden Pond, contemplating life and what he was going to with it; but we can, occasionally, find a quiet space that affords the opportunity to spend some down time with ourselves.

It could be a quiet countryside location, or in a park or a waterside location in the city, anyplace where you can get away and, in relative solitude, spend some time in nature.

Plugging into nature affords you the opportunity to set aside the daily pressures, catch your breath, reflect upon your blessing, and recharge your batteries.

Diamonds Under Your Feet

Start from wherever you are and with whatever you’ve got. Jim Rohan.

The story goes about the farmer in Africa who had heard tales about many who made their fortunes by prospecting for diamonds. Rumours abounded about the number of people staggering under the weight of the bags.

So the farmer, tired of tilling his sandy, stone strewn land for so many years, dissatisfied with the meagre results, decided one day to join them. He sold off his unproductive farm and set out prospecting, seeking his fortune.

Meanwhile, the man who had bought his farm, as he walked his property one day, tripped over a small piece of rock. He didn’t know what it was but it looked interesting so he took it home and put it up on his fireplace mantel. A curiosity piece.

Some months later, a friend of his came to visit. He spied the rock on the mantel.

“Do you know what this is,” he asked?

“No, I don’t replied the farmer. “I just saw it lying on the ground and liked it so I brought it home and put it up on the mantel.”

“Well,” responded his guest. “It’s not just a little piece of rock. It’s a diamond, in the rough.”

The idea to this story, of course, is that each of us, dissatisfied with our work, occasionally can find ourselves in the middle of our own field of diamonds, searching for greater opportunities further afield.

If only we would have the patience and the wisdom to intelligently and effectively explore the work in which we are engaged, to further explore ourselves, we would most likely find the riches we are seeking, be they financial or intangible.

Move Over Picasso!

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he or she (italics mine) grows up. Pablo Picasso.

Artistry isn’t confined to the fine arts. There is artistry in business too.

There is art in creating a unique product or service. There is art in taking it to market and in the execution of the marketing plan.

Creativity is born in all of us. It’s just that by the time we have grown into adults, many have traded away most of it.

Don’t listen to the naysayers, doubters and fence sitters. Shut down your inner critics. If you’ve got a great idea, have the courage and patience you are going to need, and are willing to do the work, go for it.

Paint a bigger picture of yourself – and your business.

And tell Picasso to move over!

Stay Strong

Belief is a truth held in the mind. Faith is a fire held in the heart. Joseph Newton.

In the journey of life, being aware of who you are and what you are really all about – clearly living with intent and purpose, can change your life.

In our hyper-competitive, time-starved, distracted world, we can easily be so obsessed with taking action, doing instead of being, that we can lose sight of who we are, often unaware of the energy we are radiating – much of it negative in nature.

This can create a toxic cocktail of uncertainty, doubt and mistrust. The pressure of daily demands can wear you down, causing you to lower your expectations, settling for less, rather than continually aiming higher, expecting the best.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.  Not if you don’t want it to be. External circumstances do not determine your emotional state and energy. You do. Your life is not meant to always be a struggle, filled with hardship and heaviness. There needs to be time for some R and R.

What is your dominant perspective? Pause for a moment and think about it. What is really important to you? Are you an optimist or a pessimist? What expectations and beliefs do you hold? Are they big or small? Do they indicate faith and trust or fear and doubt?

You get to decide how you will live your life. This freedom is yours to choose and is always available to you, even when it feels impossible, to find a new perspective, one that radiates positive rather than negative energy.

That said, then, what’s next for you?
