It’s How You Play The Game

The here and now is all we have and if we play it right, it’s all we need. Ann Richards.

The most important moment is the present moment. But how to live that?

Many of us live out our lives with one eye on the past, a past that’s already gone – and the other on the future, that’s not here yet. Choosing to live in the past or in the future steals your todays and robs you of living to the fullest.

Learning to live in the now, in the present, takes work, time and humility. If you are new to this philosophy, here are just five of many practices to get you started:

  1. Live more simply. Cut back on what you don’t want and what you don’t really need. Live as lean as you can. Don’t let all the things overtake you. It’s just ‘stuff.’
  2. Stay in control of your attitude. Strive to stay positive in spite of all you hear and observe. It is easier to give in to cynicism, but don’t. Nothing of any real, lasting value has ever been produced by a cynic.
  3. Be more compassionate and considerate of others. Start today, right now. You’ll be amazed at what flows back to you when you do.
  4. Make a conscious effort to fully appreciate the various ‘little things,’ the sights, sounds and smells, and the various emotions you feel and encounter each day.
  5. Love your work. If you don’t or can’t, then learn to appreciate the good things about it. Focus on the positive aspects and not only the negative.

You only come this way once. To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever reported back.

Nobody knows how things will turn out. Give each day your best shot. When you have gone as far as you can go, you’ll know what to do next.

It’s not whether you win or lose. It’s how you play the game.

How You See The Future

The future is called ‘perhaps,’ which is the only possible thing to call the future. And the important thing is not to allow that to scare you. Tennessee Williams.

The other thing to remember is that your future, in large part, has a lot to do with what you are doing today.

So here’s the question:

Is what you are doing today moving you towards or away from how you see the future?

You Are Never Done

I can’t go back to yesterday – because I was a different person then. Lewis Carroll.

The journey of life is long.

You are not who you were when you first started out. The choices you made were based on what you knew at the time.  And that was good then.

But you know more now. You have grown and learned. Your world view has broadened.

Do you find your interest waning in what you’re doing? Bored with the familiar? Defending the status quo? Could it be you’ve stopped growing?

In today’s world defending the status quo won’t cut it. Nor will standing still.

Letting go of the familiar is never easy and sometimes inconvenient, but it is the only way to grow.

The journey continues… you are never done.

Grab Life By The Horns

If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. Thomas Edison.

Are you challenging yourself enough? Are your goals and aspirations big enough? Small won’t cut it. Not in today’s world. If there’s something you’ve been thinking about doing, silently harbouring plans for your next big idea, but have been holding back, don’t. Resolve today to take action.

There will never be the exact right time. Opportunity is knocking on the door. You, and only you, have the key.

Life is a journey. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. That said, the clock is ticking.

Whether you want to just step up your game and continue on the same path or perhaps change and take a new path, there isn’t a better time than now.

Whichever your choice, here are five steps to help you get going:

  1. Be clear about what you want.
  2. Be clear about why you want to do it.
  3. Be clear about who you are.
  4. Be clear about what’s making you hesitate.
  5. Be clear about the value you bring.

Ignore the naysayers. Stop listening to the doubters and the trolls.

When you have done all the thinking, jump right in. When you’ve gone as far as you can, you’ll know what to do next.

Life isn’t a dress rehearsal. Get going. Grab it by the horns.
