Lead Yourself. Be Real.

The purpose of life, after all, is to love it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear, for newer and richer experience. Eleanor Roosevelt.

The other day, someone asked me, “What is leadership all about, what’s the secret to it,” they wondered?

I have been writing and thinking and talking about leadership for a long time. I’m not alone. Writers, consultants and coaches, of all stripes, have writing and selling books, holding workshops and speaking about it as if it were some kind of arcane, mysterious secret; always with the objective of getting people to step fully into their lives and share their special gifts with the greater community.

Truth be known, though, there is no secret.

Leadership comes from within.

Each and every day, leaders screw up their courage, go out the door and deliver their service or product to the world. They take action, continually analyzing what went well or not so well.

They reflect upon what happened and then, learning from the experience, make the necessary corrections, do what they instinctively know they need to do, all the while constantly reaching out to meet their aspirations or goals.

They all have a common attribute. A purpose.

It’s as simple and complicated as that.

They know why they are getting up every morning. That knowledge is the fuel that feeds the flame and keeps hope alive.

Armed with a rock solid purpose, their eye ever on the prize, they are always hopeful.

Sure they make mistakes, stumble occasionally and at times are scared to death, but they go out and do it anyway, come hell or high water: Heart and mind totally engaged.

If you’ve been holding back, secretly harbouring a dream, give yourself permission to live it. Now, while you can. Take the first step. Vow, today, that enough is enough.

Work with what you have rather than waiting for what you feel you feel you are lacking. Just get going. Nothing builds self confidence and fosters self esteem like personal accomplishment.

Decide to BE REAL. To be honest with yourself.

And do what you love. Go as far as you can. When you get there, you’ll know what to do next.

That said….. exciting news. I am starting a new motivational workshop BE REAL. If what you have just read is resonating and you are seriously thinking about making some changes, you don’t want to miss it. It may well be a game changer.

Building a life takes years.

The roller coaster is my life; life is a fast, dizzying game, life is a parachute jump; it’s taking chances, falling over and getting up again; it’s mountaineering; it’s wanting to get to the very top of yourself and to feel angry and dissatisfied when you don’t manage it. Paulo Coelho.

Life is too short and too precious to wake up with regret and misgivings.

So love the people who treat you right and forget about the ones who don’t. Don’t listen to the cynics, doubters and nay sayers. Fly with the eagles. Not with the ducks.  Be with the fearless ones, not with the nervous nellies.

Believe that everything happens for a reason. Accept and learn from the lessons that life teaches you everyday.

When you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, have the courage to let it. Who knows where it might lead; to a new business, a new career, a new love, a new move, a new city? A new country?

Nobody said that life is easy. They just promised it would be worth it.

They didn’t say how long it would take.

Day by day, one day at time, building a life takes years.

Trust Your Intuition

Follow your instinct to the end, even though you can find no reason. Ralph Waldo Emerson.

It’s a strange thing, intuition. No body knows exactly how it works but many experience and use it all the time.

The word intuition is derived from the Latin root, “intueri,” meaning to see within. That’s exactly what it is.

Intuition is known by other names, too, like a “hunch” or a “aha” moment.

It is the act of obtaining knowledge that cannot be acquired either by inference, observation, reason or experience. Someone who is intuitive has the ability to get a sense or a feeling about something or someone without knowing exactly why.

They have learned to trust their hunches, knowing that what they are doing is plugging into the wisdom of their unconscious mind.

Intuition, matched up with your left-brain, linear thinking can be a powerful tool for success. Use it with confidence.

Focus. Focus. Focus.

You cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.
Mark Twain.

Leave it up to Mark Twain to nail it.

Whatever you’re doing, whether it is changing careers, starting a new business or fixing an existing one: Perhaps it is a new relationship. At the end of the day, success hinges on your courage and attitude.

Everything else is just details.

Something to think about if green shoots are on your agenda this first day of spring.

Personal Leadership

personal-leadership-drew-simmie

Personal leadership is a state of mind. It is about taking responsibility for your thoughts and actions and how you interact with others in your personal and business relationships.

It describes a way of thinking, being and dealing with the world that begins with what you think and feel – and not by others opinions and external events. It demands that you be fully present, aware of your habits and behaviours and how they impact on people around you.

In today’s interdependent, interrelated global community we are all connected. Technology has seen to that. The ability and willingness to get along with people of different ideas, faiths and value systems isn’t easy. Intolerance often lurks just below the surface, but like it or not we are all in this together

Personal leadership advocates, as well, your willingness to approach situations that don’t necessarily align with yours with a fresh pair of eyes, with what the Zen Buddhists call a “beginner’s mind.
