Ennui No. Life Yes.

The minute you begin to do what you really want to do, it’s really a different kind of life. Buckmaster Fuller.

Are you somewhere in your middle years, grappling with the issue of personal growth, thinking there must be more to your life than what you see around you right now? Do you sense something is missing?

Just going through the motions? Been there, done that.

Relax, you are not alone. Today, more than ever, many are searching for answers and a deeper meaning for a life that they feel is theirs alone and a lifestyle with a more human dimension. Usually it is an indication that they have stopped growing and that is time to have another look at things.

Growing is a human condition. For many, it is about advancing, moving ahead. They think growth leads to rewards like money, travel, applause and all the good things that make life more fulfilling and interesting. They measure their success by what they have, their possessions, their status in society, their relationships and their accomplishments. That’s good, as far it goes.

But some find they can have all of the above and still not be satisfied. Strangely enough, getting what you want can make you happy, but over time it can also be a trap. Setting and meeting all your goals and objectives can actually inhibit your growth.

How can that happen, you ask? It’s not an uncommon experience. Paradoxically, it can happen when the actual act of achieving all that you set out to get begins to over shadow the reasons you set after them in the first place.

Many are often unaware of it happening until one day the excitement is gone. Boredom and ennui set in and they realize that they are bound up by what is euphemistically called “Golden Handcuffs.”

No longer happy with what they have or where they are, but not unhappy enough, or willing enough, to do something about it, this group is firmly ensconced is their comfort zone, a sure killer of creativity and spontaneity. It’s a place that snuffs out originality, innovation, new ideas and ways of looking at the broader world.

It is one of those forks in the road that we all come to at one time or another. Which road to take next? More importantly, why?

Moving out of a comfort zone isn’t for everybody. To believe there is something more up ahead takes courage, faith in your own abilities and in a greater Universe, but it really is a different life when you decide to listen to your heart, let go of the golden handcuffs and say yes to life.

Take Action

When you want something, the whole Universe conspires to help you realize your desire. Paulo Coelho.

No work or love will flourish out of guilt, fear or hollowness of heart, just as any plans for the future won’t materialize by anyone who doesn’t have the capacity to live in the now.

Action separates dreams from reality.

If there is a project you’ve been meaning to do, something your intuition is telling you to start, trust yourself. Listen to it.

You are braver than you think, stronger than you seem and smarter than you give yourself credit for.

Now is the time. Get out there and do it. Taking action makes things happen.

Fish Where the Fish Are

There are no secrets in business.

Competition today is fierce, to say the least. Finding clients is a challenge. Closing a sale, sealing a contract doesn’t just happen in a vacuum.

There are 3 reasons why your prospect may turn into a client:

  1. They have the money to invest in hiring you.
  2. They recognizes that there is a issue that has to be addressed.
  3. You have a story or a skill set that only you can provide.

If any one of the above isn’t present, nothing will happen. When you are growing your business, if the fish aren’t biting, move to another place in the lake.

Stick With It

Life isn’t about finding yourself. It is about creating yourself. Unknown.

For many of us, life isn’t easy, especially in these crazy times. So much seems out of whack, old fashioned values are out the window and work is increasingly precarious.

In today’s economy, the winners, always hopeful by nature, are those with the courage to change, to adapt quickly to new ideas and are always looking for new opportunities.

As scary as it is, that often means stepping outside the comfort zone, being brutally honest, and throwing out what doesn’t work anymore.

And cutting their expenses to the bone, working smarter, working with what they’ve got and playing to their strengths.

You are not alone. Contrary to popular opinion, remember the road to success is long. Whatever you’re working on, whether it’s a business proposition or yourself, however challenging, if it sticks to your soul, stick with it.

Who Is Encouraging You?

Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. When you are seeking to bring big plans to fruition, it is important with whom you regularly associate. Hang out with friends who are like minded and who are designing purpose-filled lives. Similarly, be that kind of friend for your friends. Mark Twain.

Timeless advice given long ago but still relevant today. The road can be hard. From time to time we all need encouragement.

A smile instead of a frown, a pat on the back instead of a raised eyebrow, a
“you can do it” can work wonders.

Whoever is encouraging you, why not stop for a moment and say, “Thanks. I really appreciate your help and support.”

You’re sure to brighten their day and yours, too.
