Persistence

Inside myself is a place where I live all alone, and that’s where you renew your springs that never dry up. Pearl Buck.

In the pantheon of traits that support successful people, right up there at the top, along side courage, stands persistence.

The journey isn’t always easy and sometimes seems long. It is at such a time that persistence kicks in.

Persistent people:

  1. Have a highly developed sense of purpose.
  2. Look for the positive in every situation.
  3. Take a long term view.
  4.  Are not afraid to ask for help.
  5. Don’t get frightened by uncomfortable thoughts or by not always having the answers.
  6. Are selective in whom they look to for guidance and inspiration.
  7. Find healthy ways to recharge and nurture themselves.

Choosing Optimism and Sailing Forward.

When I look at the world I’m pessimistic, but when I look at people I am optimistic. Carl Rogers.

Life is a never ending series of choices, some easier, others not so much. We make them everyday. And they affect every aspect of our lives. One of the most critical choices, I believe, is choosing whether to be an optimist or a pessimist.

I was thinking about that while watching Hillary’s speech last night as she accepted the nomination on behalf of the Democratic Party for president of the United States and comparing her views and attitudes to those of The Donald.

By now, we’ve heard and read all there is to say  (actually I’m not sure about Trump) about their conflicting pictures of the world and how they would navigate the rough seas in which we find our ourselves.

These are perilous times, not just in America but in many parts of the world. The challenges to our liberal, democratic way of life are many. That isn’t news. Clearly there is much that is wrong and much more work to be done to ‘right the ship.’

Life is complicated. There are no simple answers. No easy, quick fixes. The choice facing the American voters is stark. The dark storm clouds of pessimism are gathering.

Pessimists, by natures, are destructive, unsure of their abilities, closed to the new, disrespectful of others, and fearful.

Optimists are helpful, open to new ideas, inclusive, sharing, respectful of others, caring, forward thinking and unafraid of the future. In fact, they embrace it.

The clouds on the horizon are dark. The winds of change are howling, but as much as some would like, there is no going back. What there is is adjusting our sails, tacking into the wind and sailing forward with a firm, steady hand on the tiller.

And mindful of Franklin Roosevelt’s dictum that we have nothing to fear but fear itself.

Summertime

summertime-drew-simmie

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day,

listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.

John Lubbock, The Use Of Life.

The 90/7/3 Success Rule

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant. Robert Louis Stevenson.

Contrary to popular belief a successful venture, regardless of what it is, almost without exception, never happens over night. The road to success is long and arduous.

There is no magic, no secret to it.

Success is 90% hard work, 7% talent and 3% luck.

Courage My Love

perserverance-hang-on-drew-simmie

Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging. Joseph Campbell.

Through the course of your journey, the most difficult choice you will ever have to make is deciding whether to let go, or hold on a little longer.

The race is long. Champions never let go. Just when they need it, they come up with the last little bit of courage that propels them over the finish line.
